What is psychosocial safety?

Psychosocial safety is about preventing psychological harm that can arise from the way work is designed, managed and experienced. It includes the work factors that can create stress and risk over time, as well as harmful behaviours and interactions at work.

Common psychosocial hazards can include excessive job demands, low job control, poor support, low role clarity, poor change management, bullying and harassment, exposure to traumatic material, and violence or aggression from clients or the public. These hazards can interact and compound, so practical risk management focuses on the real drivers of harm in your context.

Legislative expectations

Across Australia, WHS laws require organisations to provide and maintain a work environment that is safe and without risks to health, including psychological health, so far as is reasonably practicable. This means psychosocial hazards must be identified and risks eliminated or minimised.

Regulators expect a documented, consultative risk management approach, with effective controls, clear accountability and regular review. Codes of practice and regulator guidance can help clarify what is reasonably practicable in each jurisdiction.
